North Cross EISTCP Program Receives Significant Gift from Globe Life

9/24/24

North Cross recently announced a third significant donation from Globe Life Liberty National Division. The $150,000 Education Improvement Scholarship gift further strengthens the school's partnership with the insurance company and underscores their shared commitment to providing educational opportunities for deserving students.

This donation marks the third consecutive year Globe Life has supported North Cross through the Education Improvement Scholarship Tax Credits Program (EISTCP). Previous gifts to the school’s Foundation have helped to expand financial aid offerings and allow more students to benefit from the school's rigorous academic program.
"We are deeply indebted to Globe Life for their unwavering commitment to our students," said William Greer, North Cross Assistant Head of School for Advancement. "Their generous contributions are making a profound difference in the lives of young people."
The EISTCP allows approved schools like North Cross to receive additional funding for eligible students whose families are below certain income thresholds. Donors who contribute to the program receive a significant tax credit, making it a financially attractive option for individuals and businesses alike.
North Cross's foundation has been instrumental in leveraging EISTCP funds to support a diverse student body. By providing financial aid, the school is able to offer its exceptional educational experience to more students from a variety of backgrounds.

Generous Donor Supports Mini-Grant Program for Faculty at North Cross

2/1/24
In both 2022 and 2023, North Cross School received generous donations from an anonymous benefactor, earmarked to support multiple mini-grants for faculty members. These grants were designed to enhance the learning experience within the school. Teachers eagerly submitted applications for these grants, which underwent a thorough review process. Following this evaluation, select applicants were awarded funds to facilitate enrichment activities and acquire additional resources for their classrooms.

According to the donor, "The mini-grant program is an effort to support innovative teaching and curricula that enhance the learning experience. By offering mini-grants to teachers and staff at NCS, the program hopes to assist and encourage educators to try new ideas and programs that will inspire students to even greater heights. Innovation can begin with the smallest of ideas, and we hope the mini-grants provide opportunities to enhance students' experiences in an ever-changing world by encouraging creativity, experimentation, academic excellence, and creative opportunities."

North Cross Head of School Armistead Lemon '95 said of the the mini-grant program, "It supports our faculty in dreaming big. They are encouraged to innovate in creative and meaningful ways to extend our student's learning experience, and in doing so the joy factor doubles for all. What a gift to have a family step up to support innovation in teaching and learning at North Cross - thank you!"

Largest Gift Ever to North Cross Annual Fund Will Benefit Students With Language-Based Learning Disabilities

12/11/23
A generous donation of $750,000 will positively impact every student at North Cross School. The largest gift ever made to the school’s Annual Fund in its 79-year history, the gift will support programming for the school’s CrossWalk program, a specialized program for students diagnosed with Language-Based Learning Disabilities, and will allow for school-wide professional development opportunities that promote best teaching practices over the next five years.

A signature program at North Cross, CrossWalk provides its students with the academic skills and confidence they need to succeed in higher education and beyond. This is accomplished by the enhanced support of academic and executive functioning skills, including reading, writing, math, study skills, and emotional regulation, to allow each student to return to mainstream classrooms fully prepared to achieve their potential and develop their talents.

Kit Prillaman, director of the CrossWalk program, said of the historic gift, “We feel very fortunate to have this support. The benefactors' generosity will allow CrossWalk teachers to stay current on the most effective research-based teaching strategies that help dyslexic students reach their potential. We know that these strategies can be beneficial for all students, so collaboration between CrossWalk and the rest of the school faculty will be ongoing to provide the best possible educational experience for all North Cross students.”

The donors, who are North Cross parents, explained that they made the donation to North Cross because, “Education breeds confidence. But what happens when the lack of confidence interferes with learning? North Cross knows the answer and has the solution to this very important question. North Cross possesses a powerful tool of hope that is appropriately called CrossWalk. Because of CrossWalk, there are no labels at North Cross. There are individual needs that are met right where they are. When those needs are met, learning begins. We are honored to support such a superior school and program.”

Discussing the gift’s impact, Head of School Armistead Lemon remarked, “It is truly transformational. This family understands that CrossWalk not only serves each individual student’s language-based needs but also operates as a center of innovation, with the potential to promote best teaching and learning practices across divisions. Their generous support for faculty professional learning underscores their vision to enhance the learning experience for all North Cross students.”

Parnell Professional Development Endowed Fund Established

10/18/23
North Cross School is pleased to announce the creation of the Parnell Professional Development Endowed Fund through the generosity of Jerome Parnell Ill, a North Cross parent.

"I feel like this gift is critical for the school to recruit and retain the most exceptional talent possible. This endowment is a vehicle to advance the professional lives of top-level faculty at North Cross. This is really quite an honor and l'm very proud to participate, remarked Parnell.

Head of School Armistead Lemon '95 said of the new endowment, "Professional development nurtures the soul of our teaching and learning community and supports our aspirations to deliver the very best education at North Cross."

North Cross EISTCP Program Receives Largest Gifts Ever from Globe Life

9/11/23
North Cross School announced today that it has received a $150,000 Education Improvement Scholarship gift from Globe Life Liberty National Division, just ten months after the agency donated the same amount to the school. The successive gifts make them the largest ever donated to North Cross’s Foundation through the Education Improvement Scholarship Tax Credits Program (EISTCP).

“The generosity of people and organizations such as Globe Life who believe in our educational model helps North Cross provide more financial aid to deserving students. With their help, we can enroll a greater number of qualified students and give them the opportunity to change not only the trajectory of their secondary school experiences but also their futures. We would especially like to thank Robert L. ‘Bob’ Putney, Globe Life Director of State Taxes, Corporate Tax; and Steve DiChiaro, Globe Life Liberty National Division CEO, for partnering with North Cross in such an impactful way,” said William Greer, North Cross Assistant Head of School for Advancement.

Through EISTCP, approved schools like North Cross may receive additional funding for eligible students whose families are below 300% of the federal poverty level, or 400% if the student has a disability. Donors who make foundation gifts receive a 65% tax credit in addition to deductions they already take. Individuals may make gifts of up to $125,000 to the foundation, and businesses have no limit on the amount of their gifts. Any individual or any business with tax liabilities in the Commonwealth of Virginia may participate.  North Cross School’s minimum gift to its foundation is $2,500. When funds have been made available through gifts, the school may take reimbursement from the foundation for students who meet the EISTCP requirements.  The amount the school may take from the foundation for any given student varies based on the recipient family’s residence and associated school district. In North Cross’s region, these amounts average $6,000 per student. A $6,000 gift would therefore support one foundation-qualified student. Foundation gifts to North Cross in the academic year 2022–23 supported 55 students.

Chris Rouse, North Cross Assistant Director of Development, explained that the school’s foundation is a win-win for everyone involved. “North Cross’s vision is to make our education available to as many young people from as diverse a population as possible. Helping families who would otherwise not have the advantage of an independent school education is a noble philanthropic goal, and receiving a 65% tax credit from the Commonwealth of Virginia is a great incentive to help them.”
